Why a competitor founded in 2021 outranks a company founded in 1978

Search engines rank what they can read. Four decades of standing count for nothing if the site hands a crawler three pages and a download link.

Here is the sequence that plays out several times a week for a manufacturer in Ludhiana or a mill in Surat. A purchase manager searches for a product and a specification. Two results come back. The first belongs to a company incorporated four years ago with a rented office. The second, further down, belongs to a business that has been making the thing since before that purchase manager was born.

The instinct is to read this as unfair. It is not unfair. It is mechanical. The younger company built a page for each product, wrote the grade and the tolerance into the text of that page, and published it in a form a crawler can parse. The older company published a home page, an About Us page, and a PDF.

What a crawler actually sees

Search engines index text and structure. They do not index reputation, factory floor space, or the fact that your grandfather started the company. On a typical dated site, here is the complete inventory of what is available to index:

  • A home page carrying the phrase "leading manufacturer and exporter" and little else
  • An About Us page of roughly 120 words
  • A Products page that lists category names with no detail behind them
  • A Downloads page linking to a PDF
  • A Contact page where the phone number is an image

That is perhaps 400 indexable words describing a business with a few hundred products. The competitor has 400 words per product.

Reputation is invisible to a crawler. Structure is the only thing it can see.

The specific words that matter in India

Buyers do not search the way marketing departments write. They search the way procurement works: a material, a grade, a size, and a city. "MS pipe supplier Ahmedabad." "Cotton yarn 30s count Coimbatore." "HT panel manufacturer Vadodara." A page that never contains those words in that order will not appear for them, regardless of how long the company has traded.

This is also why a single Products page cannot do the job. One page cannot rank for forty different product and city combinations. Forty pages can.

What changes in a rebuild

The work is unglamorous and it is mostly data entry with judgement attached. Every product gets its own page. Each page carries the specification a buyer would actually type. Categories get real descriptions instead of a two word label. The PDF stays available for people who want it, and its contents also exist as pages.

None of this is a trick and none of it involves paying for placement. It is putting what the business already knows into a form a machine can read.
